IELTS is designed to assess the language - skills of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. The test measures the candidates’ ability to communicate in English across all four language skills - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS is not recommended for those under 16 years of age.

IELTS is available in two formats – Academic and General. The academic test is required to be taken for admission into undergraduate or post graduate courses. The general test scores are required for (a) Undertaking work experience or training programmes; (b) Immigration to Australia – Canada – New Zealand; & (c) Admission to secondary education levels.

IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge (ESOL), British Council & IDP- IELTS Australia. It is recognized by professional bodies, immigration authorities, government agencies and Universities especially in Australia – New Zealand – the UK & Canada.

Scores in each of the four modules (Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening) range from Bands 1 to 9 at intervals of 0.5. The average of all four bands is recorded as the final score of the candidate.
